Robert Ray 1970s Abstract Etching of a Nude Figure

A 1970s abstract etching of a nude figure by American artist Robert C. Ray (1926-2020). The etching depicts a black and off-white interior scene of a prone nude figure surrounded by various objects including a branch of lemons. Displayed behind a white mat in a black wood frame, the etching is unsigned.

Born in Elwood, Indiana, Ray attended the John Herron Art School in Indianapolis. After spending time abroad in Spain and Italy in 1953, he studied under Hans Hoffman in Provincetown, Massachusetts at Hoffman's School of Fine Art. Ray was also a writer and poet with several published books. In addition to being an artist, Ray also ran an interior decorating business in Indianapolis.

Condition notes:

Some scuffs to frame. Some stray markings to etching. Age appropriate wear.
