Atsushi Kikuchi Signed 1960 Watercolor and Gouache of New York City

A 1960 watercolor and gouache painting by the American artist Atsushi Kikuchi (1918-2016). This abstract work depicts a crowded city street of pedestrians surrounded by New York City skyscrapers. Signed and dated to the lower left, the painting is also marked "60 NYC" to the lower left and is displayed in a wooden frame and a black mat. 

Born in Seattle, Kikuchi spent his childhood in Japan but returned to the United States for high school. He went on to study art The California College of Art and Crafts in Oakland, The Art Center in Los Angeles, and The Art Institute of Chicago. During World War II, Kikuchi was interned with his family at a internment camp by the United States government. After World War II, he served in the US military in occupied Japan. After his military service, Kikuchi worked as a professional artist in Chicago and eventually was honored with the Robert Rice Jenkins Memorial Prize from The Art Institute of Chicago.
