A decorative plate by American artist Charles Counts (1934-2000) for Beaver Ridge Studio Pottery. The rounded plate features an incised design of a bird. Signed "Beaver Ridge" to the underside.
Charles Counts was born in Kentucky and later studied in California. Before moving to Nigeria to work with craftsmen there, he was a member of artist colonies in Georgia. Throughout his life, he prioritized the preservation of Appalachian regional craft traditions, and sought to inform people of their cultural significance. Eventually Counts accepted a full-time teaching position at Maiduiguru University - only returning to the United States infrequently. In 2000, Counts passed away in Nigeria and was buried in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
