George Jo Mess Signed “Foothills” Oil on Board Landscape Painting

An oil on board landscape painting by the American artist George Jo Mess (1898-1962). Titled Foothills, this painting depicts a rugged landscape with distant mountains and hills with a river snaking its way around the various peaks. Signed along the bottom edge, the painting is displayed in a wooden frame.

Born in Cincinnati, Mess studied at Columbia University, the John Herron Art School in Indianapolis, the Modern School of Design in Chicago, as well as at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Along with his brother, Gordon Mess, and his wife, Evelynne Bernloehr Mess, he founded Circle Art Academy in Indianapolis. In the late 1930s, Mess lived in Chicago where he worked as a commercial artist for both Esquire and Coronet magazines. He moved back to Indianapolis in 1940 and began teaching at the John Herron Art School and the Indianapolis Art League. Later in the 1940s he began teaching at Indiana University.
