Mark Bulwinkle Studio Pottery Snake Tile

A studio pottery tile made by the American artist Mark Bulwinkle (born 1946). This tile depicts an impressed image of stylized snake with spiraling body and large fangs. The tile is marked "Bull" to the lower edge and "MB" to the verso.

Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, Bulwinkle studied at the University of Pittsburgh as well as the San Francisco Art Institute. He learned welding while living in San Francisco and worked as an industrial welder at Bethlehem Ship Yards until he became a full time artist in the 1980s. Bulwinkle is considered part of the West Coast Funk movement, an art movement that was in reaction to abstract expressionism and its non-objectivity.
