A 1996 oil on board painting by the Dutch-American artist Peter Bruning (1923-2018). Titled Urban Sprawl, this colorful abstract work depicts intersecting roads surrounded by rolling hills and distant mountains. Signed to the lower right, the painting is titled and dated verso and displayed in a black wooden frame.
Born in Amsterdam, Bruning received a doctorate in Germanic studies, as well as minor studies in sociology and art history, at the University of Amsterdam in 1949. He studied art in Amsterdam, Bern, and Paris. In 1950, he was a visiting instructor at Indiana State and later taught German and Dutch at Indiana University, University of California Berkley, and Rice University. While advancing his academic career, Bruning was also pursing his art career and participated actively in the local arts community.
