Gerald G. Boyce Signed 1990 Ceramic Sculpture of a Tower

A 1990 ceramic sculpture by the American artist Gerald G. Boyce (1925-1999). This highly detailed work depicts a tower with crenelated top. A figure robbed in white stands near a window in the tower and four robbed figures stand on the top of the tower holding spears. The underside of the sculpture is signed and dated. 

Born in Embarrass, Wisconsin, Boyce graduated with an undergraduate Science degree from Wisconsin State University in 1949 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1950. He later completed postgraduate degrees from Indiana University, the University of Illinois, Oxford University, and the Americano Guatemalteco Instituto in Guatemala. Boyce had an extensive teaching career, mostly as the chair of the Art Department, as well as an art history professor, at the University of Indianapolis. He also taught at Fresno State College, St. John's University, Indiana University, and Wabash College. He exhibited his own art extensively and his works have been included at exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Chicago Art Institute, the Los Angeles Art Museum, as well as many other museums, galleries, and universities.

Condition notes:

Age appropriate wear. Some discoloration to the figures. Some cracks in the figures’ clothing. Some firing cracks in the underside and base.
