A 1958 lithograph by the Spanish-Catalan artist Antoni Clavé (1913-2005). Titled Roi a la Pipe, this abstract work depicts a king wearing a crown and smoking a pipe. Signed and dated to the lower right, the print is 36/50 to the lower left. The print is unframed.
Born in Barcelona, Clavé studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Jordi in Barcelona. His artistic career began with creating advertisements and illustrations. Clavé fought on the side of the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War which eventually forced him into exile in France after the war. While in France he lived in Paris where he met Picasso and became a friend and who greatly influenced his work. Clavé also designed sets for theater and opera productions.
