Walter Sorge Signed Oil on Paper Abstract Painting

An oil on Arches paper painting by the Canadian artist Walter Sorge (1931-2021). Signed to the lower right, the painting has a tan background dotted with think impasto shapes in vibrant colors. The painting is displayed in a black wooden frame.

Born in Alberta, Canada, Walter Felix Sorge attended UCLA and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from there during the 1950s. He continued his education at Columbia University in New York where he received his Doctorate in Fine Art and Fine Art Education. Sorge also studied under Stanley William Hayter in Paris and worked at Atelier 17. He later had an extensive career as an art educator and served as head of the art department at Kentucky Southern College in Louisville, the head of the art department at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, as well as chairman of the art department at Eastern Illinois University. Sorge exhibited widely during his lifetime in the United States and abroad.

Condition notes:

Age appropriate wear. A few areas of craquelure present as well as some chips to the raised paint. There is some color bleeding from the raised paint into the background areas. Minor wear to the frame.
