What Makes Sheafer + King Different

indianapolis art gallery abstract painting and mid century modern furniture

We aren't for everyone, and we're ok with that. Some people love Victorian furniture. My mom loves Thomas Kincaid.  I have friends who buy art at Target.  My dad's house is decorated with Civil War memorabilia and fishing lures.

We’re building a community based on a shared love of meaningful art, modern design, appreciation of exceptional craftsmanship, and shared values of trust, honesty, and communication.

Sheafer + King Modern is family-owned Indianapolis art gallery and auction house dedicated to making art and exceptional mid century modern design approachable.  Whether you are a collector looking for a single piece for your home, an interior designer curating an entire space, or buying art for the first time you will work with us personally.  Art is for everyone, and we want to help you find something that will reflect your personality and inspire you when you look at it every day.

For clients looking to sell a collection, as both an auction house and an art gallery that accepts consignment, we offer a unique opportunity to maximize the value of your collection on a timeline that works for you.  We ship all over the world and regularly work with interior designers from across the united states, and our auctions are listed on the top bidding platforms in the world and advertised internationally.  We started as an online business, and our reach extends far beyond our Indianapolis art gallery.

Our Indianapolis auctions are promoted on leading international platforms and attract bidders from across the United States and around the world. With live previews in our Indianapolis gallery, collectors have the opportunity to experience works in person before bidding.

For Mid-century modern collectors, buying furniture or objects can often feel like a bit of a gamble because condition descriptions by many resellers are often vague.  We have every piece that comes into our showroom restored, and we are fanatical about describing any flaws in every piece that we sell.

Ceramics & Art Glass

Studio ceramics and art glass made by significant 20th & 21st C. artists.

We are fortunate to be in Indiana where several of the most important potters of the 20th century lived and worked.  We always have a large selection of American studio pottery and art glass. We frequently have pieces by: Clyde Burt, Toshiko Takaezu, Karl Martz, Jane & Gordon Martz, Richard Tuck, Richard Peeler, Ruth Cabat, Frederick Carlton Ball, Michael Duvall, Paul Stankard, Richard Jolley, Bruce Pizzichillo & Dari Gordon, etc.

In addition to American art glass and ceramics, we always have a large collection of Italian and Scandiavian pieces.  Mid century Murano glass, Aldo Londi and Marco Zanini for Bitossi,  Alvino Bagni, Tappio Wirkkala for Venini, Bertil Vallien and Kjell Engman for Kosta Boda, Lisa Larson for Gustavsberg, etc.

Modern Design

Mid-century Modern, Post Modern, Contemporary furniture and objects.  Our Indianapolis showroom has limited space, so we only sell truly exceptional furniture. Our MCM furniture is fully restored to nearly new condition.  Most of our furniture is Scandinavian by Danish designers like Arne Vodder and Jens Quistgaard or American furniture designed by George Nelson, Ray & Charles Eames, Florence Knoll, etc. made by Herman Miller and Knoll.  It's hard to find, but we also are constantly on the lookout for Memphis group design objects from the 80s and 90s.  Ettore Sottsass, Peter Shire, Michael Graves, Matteo Thun, etc.  Our space is limited, so we try to stick to pieces that are really special.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept consignment?  Will you buy my art?

Yes.  We accept consignment to our gallery as well as our quarterly art and design auctions.  We also occasionally purchase pieces outright if that makes sense for you and for us.

Where do you find all of your art?

Everywhere!  We buy primarily from estate auctions around the Midwest, particularly in Chicago, Cleveland, St. Louis, and Cincinnati.  We also accept consignment from artists' estates, local collectors, other dealers, etc.  We are always on the lookout for the coolest things we can find to put in the gallery.

Do you sell entire estates?

We are not a general auction company, so we don't sell certain types of items.  However, we work closely with other auction houses and estate sale companies in Indianapolis.  If you are selling an estate that has a large collection of art or MCM designer furniture, we can often partner with another business to make sure that the entire estate sells for the most money and the easiest way possible.

Do you represent artists?  Will you sell my art?

We represent several artists' estates.  In general, our gallery does not represent working artists.  This is an area we hope to one day expand into, but it's not currently something that we do.  We do sell 20th C works by living artists, so if you were active in the 1960s-80s, we'd be happy to talk to you about selling work from this period.

We are very happy to offer work by living Contemporary artists at auction.  If you want to see how your work would do in an art auction, we're happy to help.  Some artists have used this as a way to gain more national and international exposure.

I'm new to buying art.  Do you have works that I can afford?

Definitely!  We believe that art should be accessible to everyone.  We have pieces in every price range, and we are excited to talk to you about the art that we sell and help you start your collection.

Do you work with interior designers?

Yes.  Many of our best clients are interior designers from Indianapolis and around the United States.  We can often offer special rates to designers, and if you have a particular project we are happy to help you source the perfect pieces for the space.
