An oil on canvas portrait painting by the Italian-American artist August Mosca (1907-2003). Painted during the mid-20th century, this painting depicts a Modigliani-eque figure of a young girl wearing a bright yellow shirt with a pink bow in her hair. On the girl's lap is a black long-haired dachshund. Signed to the top edge, the painting is displayed in black and gold tone wooden frame.
Born in Naples, Italy, Mosca's family immigrated to the United States when he was a toddler. During the 1920s, he attended the Yale School of Fine Arts and then Pratt Institute in New York. In the early 1930s, Mosca studied at the Art Students League and the Grand Central Art School. He returned to study in Italy and was inspired by Northern Italian and Florentine Renaissance art. His works have been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum, Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, as well as other numerous museums and galleries.
