An oil on canvas painting by American artist Charles Green Shaw (1892-1974). This piece features grey, white and black abstract shapes, including the side profile of a face. In a silver-tone and black frame, this painting is signed on the lower edge.

Born in New York, Charles Green Shaw studied at Yale University and a year at Columbia University. While starting off as a freelance writer, Shaw later became interested in art and studied under Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League in New York. He quickly embraced abstraction in his art and went on to exhibit at several well known New York galleries. In 1937, Shaw helped found the group American Abstract Artists and was on the advisory board of the Museum of Modern Art from 1937 to 1941. Shaw's works are in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, as well as others.

Condition notes:

Some minor wear to the frame. Some discoloration to the white paint. One small line of craquelure above signature. Two small dimples in canvas on right edge where stretcher verso is pressing into canvas.
