James Mahlon Rosen 1963 “Yellow Landscape” Oil on Canvas Painting

A 1963 small oil on canvas painting by the American artist James Mahlon Rosen (1933-2023). Titled Yellow Landscape, the painting depicts a highly abstracted landscape scene with mountains and wispy clouds painted all in yellow. Signed and dated to the lower right, the painting is displayed in a wooden frame. A gallery tag from the Donald Morris Gallery in Detroit is attached to the verso.

Born in Detroit, Rosen studied at The Cooper Union and then went on to complete degrees at Wayne State University, as well as at the Cranbrook Academy of Arts. Rosen taught painting and art history at the University of California, Berkley, University of Hawaii, and Augusta College. His works are included in the collections of the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Cranbrook Museum of Art Museum, among others.
