Josef Presser Abstract Mixed Media Painting

An abstract mixed media painting on paper by the Polish-American artist Josef Presser (1907-1967). This painting features abstract designs, including a flower at the top and a green fish. Primarily gray and white, there are vibrant pops of blue, green and red throughout. Held in a gold-tone frame against a white mat, this piece is signed to the bottom right.

Born in Lublin, Poland, Presser immigrated to the United States as a child. He studied at the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Presser painted murals during the 1930s as part of the Works Progress Administration program. After moving to New York City, he became involved with Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17. Presser's works have been part of collections of the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., among others.
