Joseph Wolins 1952 Oil on Canvas Painting of Figures

A 1952 abstract oil on canvas by the American painter Joseph Wolins (1915-1999). This painting depicts three blue, abstract human figures posing in front of a red background. One of the figures sits, playing a guitar, the others stand and stretch their arms. Held in a black and silver-tone wooden frame, this piece is signed to the lower left and dated to the stretcher verso.

Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Wolins studied under Leon Kroll at the National Academy of Design, which he attended from 1935 to 1941. In 1947, he had his first solo exhibition at the New York Contemporary Arts Gallery. Wolins works have also been exhibited at the Corcoran Art Gallery, the Whitney Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution. His works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., among others.
