A limited edition wood engraving by the American artist Leo Meissner (1895-1977). Titled Four Chimes, this abstract work depicts four chiming bells with sound waves reverberating out from the bells as they ring. Signed to the lower right, the print is titled to the lower left and numbered 50/50 to the lower center. The work is displayed in a black wooden frame and a black mat.
Originally from Michigan, Meissner was born in a poor family and he started working at the age of fifteen while also attending the Detroit Fine Art Academy. During World War I, he served in the US Army and after he returned to the United States, he received a scholarship to study at the Art Students League of New York. While at the Art Students League, he studied under George Luks and Robert Henri. Most famous for his wood engravings, Meissner's works are held in the collections of the the Library of Congress, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others.
