A ceramic sculpture, titled An Industrial Accident, by the American artist Mark Bulwinkle (born 1946). This sculpture depicts a wolf-like creature eating a smaller, bloodied creature. The body of the wolf creature is covered in small windows and abstract designs. Its tail is pointed up and its teeth bared. The sculpture is mounted to a wooden base, which is titled to the underside. This piece is signed “by Jack Smurch,” pseudonym for Mark Bulwinkle.
Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, Bulwinkle studied at the University of Pittsburgh as well as the San Francisco Art Institute. He learned welding while living in San Francisco and worked as an industrial welder at Bethlehem Ship Yards until he became a full time artist in the 1980s. Bulwinkle is considered part of the West Coast Funk movement, an art movement that was in reaction to abstract expressionism and its non-objectivity.
