Shinichi Takahashi Signed “History (A)” Japanese Woodblock Print

A woodblock print by the Japanes artist Shinichi Takahashi (1917-1986). Titled History (A), the print has an abstract composition that consists of a dark mass of gray and black shapes with blue and white stripes against a textured light gray background. The piece is framed in a silver tone metal frame and is signed to the lower right, titled lower left, and numbered 4/30 to the lower center.

Born on Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, Takahashi taught art on the island and encouraged local people to create their own prints. In 1959, he won the Nihon Hanga Kyokai (Japanese Print Association) Award and a year later he won the Onchi Award. Some of his works were part of the 1960 Art Institute of Chicago exhibition about the Sosaka Hanga art movement.
