An oil on canvas painting of a beach by the Canadian-American artist Sidney Smiley (1912–2002). This painting depicts a sunny beach day scene with two figures standing between a sail boat and an umbrella as they look out onto the water. There is a patch of colorful flowers bordering the yellow sand. Held in a black frame, this piece is unsigned.
Sidney Smiley began his career in music, attending Seattle’s Cornish School of Music, the University of Washington, and the Chicago Conservatory of Music. Smiley was an accomplished musician that played for the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra and served as concertmaster and first violinist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. During the 1960s, Smiley switched his artistic pursuits to painting.
