Walter Sorge Signed Oil on Paper Abstract Painting


An abstract oil on paper painting by the Canadian artist Walter Sorge (1931-2021). Signed to the upper right, the painting is composed of vibrant blocks of color painted in a thick impasto. The painting is displayed in a black wooden frame.

Born in Alberta, Canada, Walter Felix Sorge attended UCLA and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from there during the 1950s. He continued his education at Columbia University in New York where he received his Doctorate in Fine Art and Fine Art Education. Sorge also studied under Stanley William Hayter in Paris and worked at Atelier 17. He later had an extensive career as an art educator and served as head of the art department at Kentucky Southern College in Louisville, the head of the art department at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, as well as chairman of the art department at Eastern Illinois University. Sorge exhibited widely during his lifetime in the United States and abroad.

Age appropriate wear. A few areas of craquelure and some chips to the oil paint present. Some scuffs to the paint present. Minor wear to the frame.
