William Itter 1986 “Plaid Tree” Gouache Painting

A 1986 gouache painting titled Plaid Tree by the American artist William Itter (1942-2025). This piece features a Christmas tree made with a yellow, gree, and gray plaid design. Each square of the Christmas tree contains brightly colored abstract shapes as the ornaments. Every year of their marriage, Itter made a painting of a Christmas tree for his wife, Diane Itter. Held in a wooden frame against a white mat, this piece is signed “Love, William” and “To Diane” to lower edge. It is also titled and dated to the lower edge.

William Itter was an artist, philanthropist, award-winning art educator and collector, who made an impact on hundreds of students during his 35-year long tenure at Indiana University. His wife, Diane Itter, was also a painter, as well as a textile artist. After her passing, he opened the William and Diane Itter Object Study at the Eskenazi Museum of Art, where he donated his collection of art and memorabilia.
