A studio pottery sculpture, titled Princess and Earrings, by English artist John Maltby (1936-2020). This abstracted sculpture features the bust of a woman wearing earrings and a crown. Attached to a wooden base, this piece is signed to the underside.
Born in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom, John Maltby studied sculpture at Leicester College of Art and then at Goldsmith College in South London. After completing an apprenticeship under David Leach, he opened his own pottery studio in 1964. He taught at Aberystwyth University, Cumbria College of Art and Design, and West Surrey College of Art and Design. After undergoing major surgery in the 1990s, he pivoted to making smaller sculptural pieces. His work has been exhibited worldwide, and he continued creating art until he passed in 2020.
