A 1979 monotype print by American artist Matt Phillips (1927-2017). Titled Homage to Istanbul, this abstract work depicts two rows of white overlapping arches filled with colorful swirls of green, blue, orange, and gray. The piece is displayed in a black frame and white mat.
Matt Phillips was an art educator, painter, and printmaker born in New York City in 1928. He received his master's degree at the University of Chicago, and studied at Stanford University, as well as the Barnes Foundation. He taught at Bard College from 1964 to 1987, in addition to teaching at Pennsylvania State University and the American College in Paris, France. There are have been two retrospectives of Phillips's works, one at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1976 and one at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. in 1978.
