A studio pottery vase by American artist Frederick Carlton Ball (1911-1992). This neutral-colored bottle-shaped vase features an abstract pattern to the exterior and a narrow neck. It is signed “FC Ball” to the underside.
Born in California, Frederick Carlton Ball was a multidisciplinary artist, working with pottery, jewelry and painting. He is known to be the first ceramicist in the state of California to create large, hand-thrown pots in the 1930s. He went on to teach at California College of Arts and Crafts, Mills College, Southern Illinois University, the University of Puget Sound, and the University of Wisconsin. To this day, his work can be seen in the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Arts and Design, and the Oakland Museum of California.
