Sidney Smiley 1984 Abstract Oil on Canvas Painting of Flowers

A 1984 abstract oil on canvas painting of flowers by American artist Sidney Smiley (1912-2002). The painting depicts an abstracted arrangement of flowers which spill over one another in vibrant yellow, blue, red, and orange. The canvas is displayed in a black wooden frame and is signed and date to the lower right. 

Born in Canada, Smiley started life as a musician, as opposed to an artist, and studied Seattle’s Cornish School of Music, as well as the University of Washington, and the Chicago Conservatory of Music. During the 1940s, he played with the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra and the Houston Symphony Orchestra. It was during the 1960s that Smiley turned to visual art and began painting.
