A 1961 oil on canvas painting, titled The Afternoon of a Faun by the American artist, Eugene Savage (1883-1978). This painting depicts a lively scene featuring mythological creatures such as the faun, half-human, half-goat. Savage used an array of pastel blues and purples in his painting. Signed and dated "Eugene Fr Savage '61" to the lower right, this painting is held in a wooden frame. An artist tag is attached verso.
Born in Covington, Indiana in 1883, Eugene Savage spent his life studying, creating, and teaching art. During his time at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1912, he was awarded the Rome Prize, which allowed him to continue his studies at the American Academy in Rome. He went on to receive his Masters of Fine Art from Yale, where he remained there to teach design and painting for twenty-eight years.
